I had an amazing summer in Boston, and I am so glad I picked it for my J1. It was always top of my list of locations to go, and it just stood out the most to me. The mix of history, culture, and the strong Irish community really made it feel like the perfect fit.

I flew direct from Dublin to Boston by myself, and met my friends from home in the J1Accom when I got off the plane. I was very nervous before going out, especially as I was travelling over alone and honestly didn’t know what to expect, from going through the airport to what Boston would really be like in person.

I was very lucky with my job. I got it through a recommendation from a friend who had gone out the year before. I spoke to everyone I knew who had been to America, whether it was Boston or elsewhere. I got lots of advice before going and took it all on board, which definitely helped. I definitely recommend working in busy places like bars and restaurants. I worked in a non-tipping golf club, but I had friends in busier places who made a lot more money over the summer!

Boston is such a great base for travelling. There are so many places nearby that are perfect for day trips, like Martha’s Vineyard, Newport, Rockport, Newburyport, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Salem. Each trip is usually under $50 for a round trip, and they’re all super fun without breaking the bank. I decided not to go travelling at the end, so I booked a few days off at a time whilst working to go to New York and Nashville (with my friends from home and the people I met in J1Accom!!). Flights were cheap from Boston and the airport is only 20 minutes in an uber from J1Accom.
In Boston itself, there’s no shortage of things to do. Amazing shops, attractions, and the best nightlife, especially in Southie and Fenway. There is so many people in Boston with Irish heritage, I felt welcome wherever I went.

I shared a room with my friend, and it was perfect for what we needed. The bathrooms were always spotless, and the staff were absolutely lovely and so helpful. I made my closest friends from my floor in the J1Accom building. There were always familiar faces, and everyone was so friendly.

The location couldn’t be better. The building is next to Park Street Station, which is the main T line to the majority of popular Boston spots. Most journeys are only $2.40, making it super affordable to get around. I also loved the J1 nights, which were brilliant for meeting new people. They were always such good fun and within walking distance of the central J1Accom building. I always felt safe thanks to the 24/7 security.
My J1 in Boston was unforgettable. From the welcoming staff at J1Accom, to the lifelong friends I made, to the incredible experiences exploring the city and beyond. I couldn’t recommend it enough. If you’re considering a J1, Boston should definitely be top of your list!
